I would suggest to also include xCoins.io in this list, it is one of the exchanges that allow you to buy Bitcoin with PayPal as well as credit card and back account. You will get discounted fees if you apply a code when signing up.

On Poloniex is known for holding money. COINBASE holds bank transfers to wallets for 7 days. Bitfinex is leaving the U.S. market and Kraken can’t handle it’s rush hour traffic. I have problems submitting orders 75% of the time and, its so backlogged limit orders don’t buy/sell when the cost is established.

Update Coinbase moved to London, has terrible customer service, charges high fees and 5% over market.

Good work with the recent update! Some of these new sites are super trendy: Binance (soon to be decentralized exchange on Ethereum), Bithumb (largest in South Korea), Bisq (the new name for bitsquare). I love the work you’re doing by updating this page regularly. It’s very helpful for the community and for beginners searching where to buy their first bitcoins. 🙂

This is so true. Where was I in June 2010… in a college dorm spending all of my money on budweiser. Had i known, I would have built the best and largest bitcoin exchange in the world. Now would I be a rich and powerful man. Yes – that’s you Coinbase! 🙂

I am using Coinbase and can’t get past the ID Verification. I’m trying to buy more bitcoins. They don’t have a phone and haven’t answered my Emails. Let me know how to get past the ID requirement so I can buy more. Thanks

ID VErification needs a good quality pics for front and back of driving license or ID. Make sure you have them. That should work. Else their customer support is very good. They have a chat bot which answers most of the questions. Else you can contact them via email. I typically get their response in less than 2 hrs

I like this post. Some points I would like to say though… Coinbase is an A+ trust score but GDax is a B+? It’s the SAME COMPANY! WHat’s even better is that Coinbase is built ON TOP of GDax so it could not be possibly any safer than what it’s built on.

so tell me why all the review blogs I have read today not saying the truth about the big sites? I joined several of them and have been researching this area since Feb this year to understand it – being a tad conservative with my money… And a mild statement like “service is not great” is a wild understatement! I have watched the Trollbox on Poloniex, for instance, for days ( now defunct as they could not keep up). It had countless requests to trouble shoot for many thousands of clients unable to withdraw their coin or get validation to enable withdrawal because the validation software is not real ( I found that out by meeting one of the speakers at a very intellectual presentation on AI who is a founder of very good validation software in Berlin that had won awards for their work there) and that this “validation… Read more »

it boils down to management. some of the sites out there are just in business because the feel and think the will earn lot of money without doing much work. The only ones that are ready to support their users quires will remain the best. other will eventually fade away.
Thanks for pointing this out as it will help both content creators and the thriving crypto companies

Thanks a million for all the information! What do you think the exchanges will do and how will they react for the upcoming segwit event? Would it be even conceivable that there would be a chain split? Should be interesting to see which exchanges list which coin if BTC splits into two separate crypto tokens.

This article is a stepping stone. I have a confusion however,..
I am from Nepal so, there are not much services available currently. Going through exchange process itself is a real pain. The question is do you have any basic rules that you would follow while trading/exchanging online/offline for interested investors like us? Do please share with us! It would be a great help.

Coinspot is small ( so trades are small) but I feel safe. It is very functional and a real Australian person calls you on the phone to do the validation which is comforting after the month or so poloniex took to get on.

Although slightly difficult because of withdrawals, I am using Coinbase. I am also in Australia. I am getting a hardware wallet to store the coin in so I can access it easily. Cannot withdraw from Coinbase without closing the account, but can send to a wallet as I understand it – someone here may be able to advise if what I have understood and said is incorrect.

Only problem I ever had with withdraw from Coinbase is time from hitting withdraw and when funds appears in actual bank account. Same with multiple purchases of different coins in short time span. Funds for purchase came out of bank account within minutes, but coins not credited to account for almost 2 weeks. Coinbase did give notice when would be credited to account, but that was after hit purchase button. If was trying to do fast turn around, because price went way up, would not have been able to. When did get coins price was lower, held until came back up, but messed up my strategy, and profit margin ended up much lower. That is only issue I have had with them, amount of time between purchase and allocating coins to accounts, and time between withdraw and when funds arrive in bank account.

Thanks for the succinct advice about Bitcoin Exchanges. I am a complete novice. Today Signed up for an account with Coinbase and was verified. However I was unable to finalise the account. Robotic Chat assistance no help and no email support address to send queries. Not sure how to proceed or whether to try sign up with a different site. Any suggestions?

Coinbase don’t warn Canadians that they can’t anymore provide sells from BTC to CAD before you verify your bank account. And they have no excuses, because before verifying your bank account you have to verify your ID so they already know that you’re a Canadian resident ! There are other platforms for Canadians (Kraken, Quadriga, …)

Just because you have Canadian ID it does not mean you live in Canada. My cousin owns a house, bank account, and has a family in the UK – but is 100 percent Canadian.

hi, my biggest interest with the cryptocurrencies is the liquidity. The personal experience of a few friends who used to be involved in this trade was that they had low liquidity converting whatever they made in these exchanges back to USD/Euro and they had to find services that accept BTC to actually spend what they had in the system. I’m wondering now if that was liquidity levels on the specific exchange they were using? Did this only happen in the past?

I noticed you did an excellent paragraph explaining how to convert what you put in BTC back to a real currency as well. Also, anyone’s personal experience from trading would be welcome

So much liquidity happens on the largest cryptocurrency exchanges . Just look through the above list (on bitcoinexchangers.org home page) – the top 4 are Coinbase (highest liquidity with GDAX), Poloniex (largest Ethereum Exchange), Kraken (largest bitcoin exchange in the EU), and CEX (excellent liquidity and good for beginner traders like me).

If you are someone who wants good customer service and to trade bitcoins then you should use Xcoin They don’t lock your account and ignore your emails. If you have an issue a person response to your problem, not an auto reply. They even help you get back lost profits from PayPal fraudsters. This Xcoin is the model for how Bitcoin could be if it was done right.

Really ? I’ve never heard of Xcoins before and I’ve been in bitcoin for many years now. Who are they, how long has it existed for ? Who is the CEO ?
